When Recognition Express Wigan & Wirral got an order for 2,000 badges, it was no ordinary mission.
For the badges were to mark the 60th anniversary of the Liverpool Taxi Drivers’ Blind Children’s Outing.
The cabbies were taking 89 blind and partially-sighted children on a day trip to Southport Pleasure Land.
The Recognition Express badges were sold in advance to raise funds, and worn with pride on the day by most of the 89 children, 160 parents and carers, 60 cabbies, and the police outriders who escorted the cabbies’ cavalcade.
“There are big orders, small orders – and special orders,” said Gill Underhill, owner of Recognition Express Wigan & Wirral, based in Winstanley Road, Orrell, Wigan. “It’s good to be able to play a part in such a worthwhile event.”
Secretary of the taxi drivers’ committee Margaret Doran said: “It was a great day – the best yet. The police outriders put balloons on the aerials of their motorbikes and everyone waved as we went by. The badges were excellent.”
The children were from St Vincents School for the Blind and Partially Sighted in West Derby, and the Royal School for the Blind in Wavertree, Liverpool. The trip, when they experience the buzz of an amusement park, is the highlight of the year.
The cabbies decorate their taxis, and fundraise all year to make sure each child has a gift to take home. This year there were also gifts from Argos and the Early Learning Centre.
As the owner of Recognition Express Wigan since 2005, Gill has built a portfolio of clients within the Wigan, West Lancashire and North Liverpool areas. She took on Recognition Express Wirral in 2008.
She gave up her career as county administrator for Tennis Lancashire to become her own boss.
