Jay Milling: Exeter

I had been a franchisee in the food business for 10 years. Having sold off my last remaining outlets, and taken a few months off to relax, I came across this business by accident. The more I looked for reasons not to get involved, the more reasons I found to get involved!

Franchisee Jay Milling

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?

I was a franchisee in the food industry previously, and I really like the ability to run my own business while still being part of a larger group.

What did you do before taking up a franchise?

In addition to my time as a franchisee I did some real estate development and also invested in a number of small, local businesses.

How did you raise the finance?

I invested my own money as well as utilising a small business loan from NatWest.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

The initial training from Speedy Freight was superb, and the program of field support staff visits provides regular support. I’ve also always found other franchisees to be extremely helpful and supportive.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

I’m generally in the office between 8:30 and 5:30, dealing with business as it comes in, and proactively telephone selling and following up quotes and leads. I transfer the office phone lines to my mobile outside those hours and on weekends, and I find that the computer based programs we use enable me to service my customers quite easily wherever I am.

What challenges have you faced?

Attracting new customers! I also find it a challenge to convince people that they don’t have to accept the parameters that traditional courier companies impose.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

I’ve been involved in the franchise business model for over 20 years so no, but working in a B2B environment certainly has!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?

Do your homework, and ensure that you have the personal support network to encourage your success.

What are your plans for the future?

Continue to grow this business and develop a solid management team to run the day to day needs of the business.

Would you do it again?

Yes, no question!
