We sat down with Jon Kay, a recent franchisee at Bury St Edmund’s, and asked him a few questions about his experiences with Canine Creche Group.
What did you do before?
I had been successfully working in the construction industry as a Quantity Surveyor for nearly 13 years when I decided I needed a change.
What made you choose this franchise?
I hadn’t even considered starting a franchise let alone running my own business seriously, prior to seeing this opportunity pop up on my social media feed.
It started off with a simple conversation with my wife, almost in jest, but this developed into a strong desire to make a life change to have more control over our lives, which then evolved into a drive to run my own business in an industry that we would both enjoy.
I knew of this model and liked how the company operated, I recognised they were doing something quite special in a new service area and that there were others trying to replicate the business with less success. It was logical if I was to attempt this, I do it with the support of an award-winning market leader.
What were the last two weeks like prior to you opening your Canine Creche?
In one word – manic! I had only just received the keys to my premises the week before (three weeks before my opening date) so at that point, to say my stress levels were high would be an understatement! My planning and organisational head kicked in and I proceeded to work day and night to be fit for the opening. It wasn’t until 4 days before our Grand Opening that I felt the sense of satisfaction of being ready for the big day.
Tell us what was the hardest moment?
The hardest moment I’ve had so far was in finding my premises and then the legal side of the lease. Due to the nature of the business, estate agents didn’t grasp the concept and I never felt they did a great job in “pitching” me to prospective landlords. Some outright dismissed the idea.
What has been the greatest moment thus far?
I’ve had many already, two standout moments were – my opening day and how well my creche was received. I’d spent a solid 3 weeks working day and night to be ready for that day and to have the positive feedback I received was very rewarding. Not least from friends and family, but prospective clients who were excited that I had arrived in their town, which also gave me further reassurance that this was something that will work very well in Bury St Edmunds.
The other moment was with one of my first customers on their third visit who opened up to me. The family were having to consider putting their dogs up for adoption, struggling to cope with their energy levels, but with my Creche opening we’ve given the dogs a new chance and taken the pressure off the family, they’ve loved every minute and to see them pulling on their leads with anticipation to get through the door, combined with the gratitude of the owner is an incredibly rewarding feeling!
Has it been all you expected it to be?
Most definitely, I’m enjoying the new challenges that arise and everything I’m learning, not just about running a company but about myself too.
What sort of results have you had to date? Are you where you want to be?
Really positive, and I’m ahead of my conservative growth projection, which at such an early stage is very encouraging and reinforces my confidence in the business and the location I chose.
How do you feel about the decision to change your life?
As each day passes I feel more and more confident I made the best decision of my life. I strongly believe things happen for a reason and there was a sequence of events that led me to where I am today, and it all started when I chose a puppy.
How has this affected your personally? The way you feel? Day to day life?
I have been told I am noticeably happier! I feel a lot different, motivated, comfortable and content. I have a new sense of confidence and a drive I never knew existed in me.
The days are long, but time passes very quickly when you have your best friend by your side. Dogs are an incredible stress reliever! I come home from my business and I like talking about my day and the dogs I’ve seen with my wife, whereas before I wouldn’t mention my work and often come home frustrated and irritable.
What do you have planned for 2017?
Theme weeks, puppy parties and dog events!
I have a stand at “Paws in the Park” in Bury St Edmunds in May, I also want to start working within the community more so I become known as the “go-to guy” for dog advice and care.
