Smart, flexible and a solid business on your own terms

Setting up in business with a new franchise might seem riskier than investing in one with a track record, but it is also more exciting.

“I knew when I found the Smart PA franchise that it was only a few years old, so I checked it out thoroughly,” says Michelle Scarisbrick.

Smart PA franchise partners provide administrative and PA services to businesses. It is home-based and flexible, and it was started in 2011.

“I researched it online, looked at information about it on the Companies House website and checked directors’ backgrounds. I also got a friend with a law degree to look at the franchise contract and asked founder Andrew Wright questions about it.”

Michelle, 38, a former civil servant from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, says: “I also talked to an existing franchisee about the level of support from the franchisor. I felt confident about it and excited to be involved at the beginning.”

Smart PA managing director Andrew Wright says: “We help potential new business by providing our bank references, abbreviated accounts. They can also talk to existing partners.”

Smart PA, which requires an investment of £10,000, will be at the British Franchise Exhibition in Manchester on June 20 and 21.

Terrence Bennett used his feet to investigate the new EstatesDirect.com estate agency franchise.

“I saw their boards up outside vendors’ houses and went round to talk to users. It’s useful to get the customer’s view of a new business,’ says Terrence, 27, from Cardiff.

As an estate agent himself, he investigated the new company’s business model and decided it would work.

He advises: “Investigate a new franchise to ensure you believe in it fully, because only then will you get the
results you want.”

EstatesDirect.com uses a combination of online marketing and regional agents who meet customers face to face. You can getn started from £1,950.
