Tony and Michael Vorley worked for a combined 77 years in Rolls Royce and Prelli Tyres respectively. Looking for a new and exciting challenge, the two men embarked on what would become their most successful career journey to date. Aspray provided the two men with the opportunity to be their own bosses, with a strong brand appeal, and genuine enthusiasm for team work, which finally clinched the deal…
November 12, 2007- Tony & Michael Vorley – Aspray Cumbria
Michael and I worked for a combined 77 years in Rolls Royce and Pirelli Tyres respectively. No, we aren’t a couple of old fossils (despite the photograph) and yes we deserve a rest.
Instead we decided that what we really needed was a new challenge and that the new venture had to be totally different from those corporate years. We had to run our own business. No more corporate security, large company problems, management speak or expense accounts.
Over the years we had looked at a few businesses but always bowed out to the challenges, new technology and opportunities afforded by the multinational Company and they were both good companies to work for. We cut our teeth in computing when valves still glowed and moved on to Project Management, Product Support and Consultancy.
We both travelled extensively and dealt with overseas corporations, foreign governments and agencies and lived through the evolution of travel. From propellers to high bypass turbofans; riots and revolutions to the “what country are we in today” syndrome.
I particularly remember the three years working on an EU funded research project and participating in the 1989 Pirelli Classic Marathon Rally from London to Cortina in Italy with Stirling Moss, Paddy Hopkirk and Roger Clarke. We managed third in class despite extensively damaging the Jaguar (repair bill £30,000)!
So why did we choose Aspray?
We spent 12 months looking at a variety of opportunities but did not find anything that we could get terribly enthusiastic about and had just about given up when we saw an advertisement for Aspray. It had appeal and sold itself by demonstration of the concept and application rather than lavish advertising. No free lunches with Aspray!
I made the final decision after attending the conference and I think it was the enthusiasm that the whole network had and the willingness to help each other that finally convinced me.
We look forward to the challenge. The final hurdle is now to see if Dave can train us. It will certainly test him!
